Dapol Terrier Tank Locomotives

This page is devoted to my interest in Dapol's N Gauge Terrier Tank Locomotives.

My N gauge model of Langston Bridge, featuring Terriers, is here

Osborn's Models Special Edition Terrier

Available from Monday 10th August 2009. Limited to 250 units

Osborn's Models have comissioned a limited editon of the only Terrier to have run on the GWR into the days of BR. Originally built in 1877 as No 43 Gipsyhill, the locomotve was sold to the Weston Clevedon and Portishead Light Railway in 1925 and became No 2 Portishead. In 1940 this railway was absorbed into the GWR and the engine was renumbered No 5. It was scrapped by BR Western Region in 1954.

Released Models

The Terrier was first oficially released on 28th March 2009 at the Alexandra Palace Show in the form of 4 models: 32662 in BR Black, 2662 in Southern Black, and Stepney & Boxhill in LBSCR livery.

video file size 9Mb

This video illustrates just how powerful this little engine is. BR Liveried 32662 is shown pulling 8 coaches. The train is shown running at several speeds, including starting all eight coaches from a standing start. The model is straight out of the box and has not been run in.

Note: The jerky nature of the video seems to be due to either the flash encoding or playback process. It is not due to the locomotive's performance, which is very smooth.

This time with just two coaches (2Mb)

A spot of shunting. This illustrates how well the locomotive runs at low speed over point work. It also illustrates how bad my camera is at video.

Below is a shot of an early test build of Dapol's forthcoming Terrier Tank locomotive. Note there is more work to be done and this is not the final build state. The tanks in this model are plastic, which will be replaced by tungsten in the released version. This model was shown pulling 7 coaches on the flat.

4th May 1961. Ex-LB&SCR "Terrier" class A1X 0-6-0T No. 32678 pauses at North Hayling station with a train from Havant to Hayling Island on the afternoon of Thursday 4th May 1961. Photograph by D.E. White. 32678 was originally class A1 introduced by Stroudley in 1872 -1880, this engine being built at Brighton Works in July 1880. The class was modified to A1X from 1911. This engine was originally named "Knowle" and carried the name "Bembridge" whilst later working on the Isle of Wight. It was returned to the mainland and withdrawn from service in October 1963. It was one of several that made it into preservation and is still in working order some 128 years after being built. The Hayling Island branch was closed in 1963, being worked by A1X tanks right up until the end.
