Fitting a DCC decoder to an Ixion Manor
The wonderful new Ixion Manor is not fitted with a DCC socket, and that's hardly surprising given the small amount of free space in the tender. However it is possible to fit a TCS Z2 decoder and no modifications to the tender's bodywork are required. Click on images for a larger picture.
A view of the decoder and the upturned tender body.
Tender with body removed prior to conversion
Here is the decoder wired up but not quite in the correct position. I've got the orange and grey wires transposed, so the decoder has been programmed with the backward running bit set. The blue, yellow and white wires are for lighting control. I've left them longer than absolutely necessary just in case the decoder ever gets used in another locomotive.
The decoder bottom edge is positioned just behind the lugs that locate the tender body, and is angled slightly towards the front of the tender. As the body is lowered the decoder is pushed to a slightly greater angle. Allowing the decoder to sit tilted from the vertical is key to getting it to fit without having to trim any plastic from inside of the tender body. It helps to remove the coal load before refitting the tender body. It simply unclips, and can be clipped back afterwards.
Ixion have also produced a fitting guide for the bag of bits that comes with the Manor.
